Interstellar Lab embarks on a new industrialisation phase with ABB Robotics

The biotech startup Interstellar Lab, revolutionizing plant molecular farming with its controlled-environment pods and biofarming platform approach is partnering with ABB Robotics, one of the world’s leading robotics and machine automation supplier, to scale production of BioPods. To address the increasing demand from its clients, Interstellar Lab is building the BioPod Pilot Factory.

This strategic alliance aims to scale and optimize the production of Interstellar Lab’s BioPod, the AI-controlled biofarms that have gained considerable success among Natural Ingredients, Cosmetics, Pharmaceuticals and F&B companies. BioPods are designed to enable sustainable and high-precision cultivation of high-value-added plants. BioPods accelerate production cycles and increase production of bioactive compounds in plants, while offering a sustainable cultivation tool that anticipates the challenges of sourcing plants and the environmental impact of producing natural ingredients.

Since 2018, Interstellar Lab is committed to advancing sustainable practices, embracing bio-inspired design, and championing responsible material usage throughout the manufacturing process. Using the most advanced and durable 3D-priting technology,

Interstellar Lab embraces a lean manufacturing approach, carefully aligning production with demand. Leveraging 3D-printing technology accelerates this process, significantly minimizing waste by using only the necessary material.

The manufacturing of the highly controlled-environment modules requires state-of-the-art 3D-printing robot, featuring the IRB 6620 robotic arm from ABB Robotics. The high-precision robotic arm is equipped with a high-output S25 extruder by CEAD. Interstellar Lab aims to be at the forefront of material testing and to implement BioSourced resources in the manufacturing chain.

This leading-edge technological collaboration, is the first step of building BioPod Pilot factory. BioPod Pilot Factory is backed by FRANCE 2030, the financial program from the French government, to start its deployment Q1 2024. Managed by Minister Roland Lescure, Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, and Bruno Bonnell and operated by Bpifrance, this program aims to help companies accelerate their industrialisation and building their first factory. BioPod Pilot factory is currently under construction in Ivry-sur-Seine in a 30,000 SF building. With BioPod Pilot factory, Interstellar Lab is looking to start scaling the production of BioPods to deliver first units of BioPod 2.0 to customers in 2024.

About Interstellar Lab

Interstellar Lab is an American-French startup founded in 2018 specializing in bio-technologies that develops, builds, and operates biofarming solutions to optimize plant cultivation and molecular composition on Earth and also in space. The highly controlled environment modules developed by Interstellar Lab enable sustainable, high-precision cultivation of high-value-added plants used by the Natural Ingredients, Cosmetics, Pharmaceuticals and Food industries. The company has also developed strategic partnerships with NASA and ESA for plant cultivation and research in microgravity. Based in Ivry-sur-Seine (France) and at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida (USA), Interstellar Lab today has over 30 employees from SpaceX, Airbus, Trimble and Agricool, and is backed by institutional investors including BPI and France 2030.
